Sígsig is a canton located in the southeastern part of Azuay Province in Ecuador. The town, situated at an elevation of approximately 2,500 meters above sea level, is known for its rich cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship.
The area is particularly famous for the production of Panama hats (locally known as toquilla straw hats), a craft that has been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. The town's colonial architecture and surrounding agricultural landscapes reflect its historical development from a pre-Hispanic settlement to a Spanish colonial town.
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, handicrafts, and increasingly, cultural tourism. The surrounding region features archaeological sites that provide evidence of ancient civilizations, including the Cañari people who inhabited the area before the Inca conquest.
