Shubenacadie is a rural community located in central Nova Scotia, Canada, along the Shubenacadie River. The name derives from the Mi'kmaq word "Segubunakade," meaning "place where ground nuts grow."
The area has significant historical importance as it was originally a Mi'kmaq settlement and later became an important transportation route during Nova Scotia's colonial period. The Shubenacadie Canal, completed in 1861, was a vital waterway connecting Halifax Harbour to the Bay of Fundy. The community is also known for its painful history as the site of the former Shubenacadie Indian Residential School (1930-1967).
Today, the area is recognized for its natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural heritage, particularly through the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park, which serves as both an educational facility and a sanctuary for native and exotic species.
