Shirakawa, officially known as Shirakawa-go, is a historic village located in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The village is renowned for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old. These distinctive houses feature steep thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall and were built without using a single nail.

The village was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, along with nearby Gokayama, for preserving a traditional way of life and architecture that adapted to the region's harsh winter conditions. Historically, the village sustained itself through the cultivation of mulberry trees and the production of silk.

Today, while maintaining its cultural heritage, Shirakawa serves as a living museum where visitors can experience traditional Japanese rural life and architecture.
