Shawneetown is a small city located in Gallatin County, Illinois, along the Ohio River. Established in 1748, it is one of the oldest settlements in Illinois and played a significant role in the early development of the state. The city was originally a Native American settlement of the Shawnee people before European settlers arrived.

During the early 19th century, Shawneetown became an important river port and banking center, with the Bank of Illinois being established there in 1816. The city faced several challenges throughout its history, including devastating floods, which led to the establishment of New Shawneetown further inland in the 1930s.

Today, Old Shawneetown preserves several historic buildings that reflect its important role in Illinois' early banking and commerce history, including the notable Bank of Illinois building, built in 1839-41, which is recognized for its Greek Revival architecture.
