Seaton Sluice is a coastal village in Northumberland, England, located at the mouth of the Seaton Burn. Originally named Hartley Pans, the village's current name derives from the sluice gate system implemented in the 18th century to help prevent the harbor from silting up.
The village has a rich industrial heritage, particularly in salt production, coal mining, and bottle manufacturing. Sir Ralph Delaval developed the harbor in the late 17th century, making significant improvements that transformed it into an important port for the coal trade.
Today, Seaton Sluice retains much of its historical character, with its old harbor structures and the Kings Arms pub, which dates back to the 18th century, serving as reminders of its maritime past. The village's coastal location and historical significance make it a point of interest for those exploring Northumberland's industrial heritage.
