Santa Clara is the capital city of Villa Clara province, located in the central region of Cuba. Founded in 1689, the city played a significant role in Cuban history, particularly during the Cuban Revolution.

The city is perhaps best known as the site of the decisive Battle of Santa Clara in 1958, led by Che Guevara, which helped secure the victory of the Cuban Revolution. The city retains much of its colonial architecture and layout, with a traditional central park (Parque Vidal) serving as its heart.

Santa Clara has developed into an important cultural center, hosting several educational institutions including the Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas, one of Cuba's major universities. The city's cultural scene includes various theaters, cultural centers, and museums that preserve and showcase both revolutionary history and local artistic traditions.
