Sainte-Mère-Église is a historic commune in the Normandy region of France, most famously known for its significant role during the D-Day landings of World War II. The town gained particular notoriety when American paratrooper John Steele became caught on the church steeple during the invasion, an event that is commemorated today with a parachute and mannequin hanging from the church tower.

This small Norman town, with its medieval church at its center, has preserved much of its historical character while maintaining a strong connection to the events of June 1944. The town is home to the Airborne Museum, which tells the story of the American paratroopers and their role in the liberation of France. Beyond its World War II heritage, Sainte-Mère-Église represents typical Norman architecture and culture, with its traditional stone buildings and agricultural surroundings.
