Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is a historic medieval village located in the Occitanie region of southern France. The village, nestled in the Gellone valley, is classified as one of the 'Plus Beaux Villages de France' (Most Beautiful Villages of France).
At its heart stands the Abbey of Gellone, founded in 804 by Guilhem, a cousin of Charlemagne, which represents a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture. The abbey, along with the nearby Pont du Diable (Devil's Bridge), is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites as components of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela.
The village maintains much of its medieval character with narrow streets, ancient houses, and stone buildings. The cultural significance of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert extends beyond its architecture, as it was an important stop for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela and continues to be a center for preserving medieval heritage and religious art.
