Republic is a small city located in Ferry County in northeastern Washington state. Founded as a gold mining camp in the late 1890s, the city was named after the Great Republic mining claim. Despite its modest size, Republic has maintained its historical character and is known for its rich geological heritage.
The area is particularly notable for its fossil deposits at the Stonerose Interpretive Center, where visitors can discover well-preserved plant and insect fossils from the Eocene epoch, approximately 49 million years ago. The city serves as the county seat of Ferry County and continues to be a gateway to outdoor recreation in the Colville National Forest and the surrounding Okanogan Highlands.
