Randazzo is a historic town situated in the northern part of Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano. Built largely from local volcanic stone, the town's medieval architecture reflects its rich history dating back to the Greek and Roman periods. Located at an elevation of approximately 765 meters, Randazzo is one of the closest towns to Mount Etna's crater and has remarkably survived numerous eruptions over the centuries.
The town preserves significant cultural heritage through its three main churches representing different architectural styles: the Byzantine-Norman Santa Maria, the Gothic San Martino, and the San Nicola church. Randazzo's urban layout still follows its medieval plan, with narrow streets and historic buildings showcasing traditional Sicilian craftsmanship and architectural elements.
