Punxsutawney is a borough located in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, United States. The town is most famously known as the home of Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog whose annual February 2nd emergence from his burrow has become a nationally recognized tradition known as Groundhog Day.
This unique cultural celebration, which began in 1886, draws thousands of visitors to the town each year. The borough has preserved much of its 19th-century architectural heritage, reflecting its development during the lumber and coal mining era of central Pennsylvania. Beyond its Groundhog Day fame, Punxsutawney maintains a rich local history showcased through various historical sites and cultural institutions.
The town's name comes from the Native American Lenape term "ponksad-uteney," which roughly translates to "town of the sandflies" or "town of the mosquitoes."
