Port Orford is a small coastal city located in Curry County, Oregon, along the southern Oregon coast. Established in 1856, it holds the distinction of being the most westerly city in the continental United States. The town was named after George, Earl of Orford, by Captain William Tichenor, who first landed in the area in 1851. The community has historically been supported by fishing, lumber, and agriculture industries.
Today, Port Orford maintains its working port, known as the Dock Beach, where fishing boats are uniquely lifted in and out of the water by crane. The area is known for its artistic community, with several galleries and studios showcasing local artists' work. The town's cultural heritage is preserved through various historical sites, including the Port Orford Lifeboat Station, which is now a museum, and Battle Rock, a significant landmark that tells the story of early settler-indigenous encounters.
The surrounding area offers natural beauty with its rugged coastline, beaches, and proximity to old-growth forests.
