Pontechianale is a small mountain commune situated in the province of Cuneo, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Located in the upper Valle Varaita at an elevation of about 1,600 meters above sea level, it sits near the French border. The town is characterized by its traditional Alpine architecture and is known for the artificial Lake Pontechianale, created by a dam in the 1940s.
The original village was partially submerged during the lake's creation, and a new settlement was built at a higher elevation. The area preserves its Occitan cultural heritage and traditional mountain lifestyle, while serving as a base for outdoor activities in both summer and winter. The local economy traditionally relied on agriculture and livestock farming, though tourism has become increasingly important in recent decades.
