Petronell-Carnuntum is a historic municipality in Lower Austria, located along the Danube River between Vienna and Bratislava. The area is primarily known for being the site of the ancient Roman city of Carnuntum, which was one of the most important military and civilian centers of the Roman Empire's Pannonian frontier.
Founded in the 1st century AD, Carnuntum served as the capital of the Roman province of Upper Pannonia and reached its peak during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Today, the Archaeological Park Carnuntum features reconstructed Roman buildings, including a fully functional Roman city quarter with public baths, private houses, and a gladiator school, offering visitors a unique glimpse into Roman civic and military life. The site includes an amphitheater and remains of the civilian city, making it one of the most significant archaeological sites in Central Europe.
