Pecos is a historic village in San Miguel County, New Mexico, located along the Pecos River. The area is rich in Native American and Spanish colonial history, with the Pecos Pueblo (now preserved as Pecos National Historical Park) being one of the most significant cultural sites in the region.
The pueblo, inhabited from around 1100 CE to 1838, was once one of the largest and most powerful of the Native American communities in the American Southwest. The village played a crucial role in the early Spanish colonial period and later served as an important stop along the Santa Fe Trail.
Today, Pecos maintains its historical significance while serving as a gateway to outdoor recreation in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Pecos Wilderness.
