Pahiatua is a rural service town located in the southeastern part of New Zealand's North Island, in the Tararua District. The town's name comes from the Māori language, meaning "resting place of the atua (god)."
Founded in 1881, Pahiatua has served as an important agricultural center for the surrounding farming community. The town gained historical significance during World War II when it hosted Polish refugee children who were evacuated from Eastern Europe, establishing a temporary Polish community that has left a lasting cultural legacy.
Today, Pahiatua maintains its rural character while preserving its unique historical heritage through various local initiatives and community spaces.
