Oradour-sur-Glane is a commune located in the Haute-Vienne department in west-central France. The village holds profound historical significance as the site of one of the most tragic events in French World War II history. On June 10, 1944, German Waffen-SS troops destroyed the village and killed 642 of its inhabitants.
Following this tragedy, French president Charles de Gaulle ordered that the village be maintained as a memorial and museum. The ruins of the original village have been preserved as they were left after the massacre, serving as a permanent reminder and testament to the civilian casualties of war. A new village was built nearby after the war.
Today, the old village, known as the "Village Martyr," is a important historical site that draws visitors who come to learn about and reflect upon this significant chapter in French and European history. The Centre de la Mémoire d'Oradour, opened in 1999, provides detailed historical context and documentation of the events.
