Okemos is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located in Meridian Township, Ingham County, Michigan. Named after Chief John Okemos, a Native American leader of the Saginaw Chippewa tribe, the community was established in the mid-19th century.
Situated approximately 7 miles east of East Lansing, Okemos has developed from a rural farming community into a suburban area with strong educational and cultural ties to nearby Michigan State University. The community maintains a blend of residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, and preserved natural areas, reflecting both its historical roots and modern development. Its proximity to the state capital of Lansing and its location within the greater Lansing metropolitan area has made it an important cultural and educational hub in mid-Michigan.
