North Kingstown is a historic coastal town in Washington County, Rhode Island, with roots dating back to colonial America. Originally part of Kingstown, which was founded in 1674, the town split into North and South Kingstown in 1722. This waterfront community, situated on Narragansett Bay, has preserved much of its maritime heritage and historic architecture.
The town includes several historic villages, including Wickford, which features well-preserved 18th and 19th-century buildings. North Kingstown played a significant role in Rhode Island's maritime history, serving as a shipbuilding center and trading port. The area maintains strong connections to its cultural heritage through various historic sites, including Smith's Castle, one of the oldest houses in Rhode Island. The town has also been home to important military installations, including the former Quonset Point Naval Air Station, which has since been transformed into a business park while maintaining its aviation heritage through the Quonset Air Museum.
