Nipomo is an unincorporated community located in San Luis Obispo County, California. Situated along the state's Central Coast, the area was originally inhabited by the Chumash people. The town's name derives from the Chumash word meaning "at the foot of the hills."
Nipomo developed in the late 1800s around the establishment of the Southern Pacific Railroad and agriculture, particularly known for its strawberry fields and other crop cultivation. The community gained historical significance through the work of photographer Dorothea Lange, who captured the iconic "Migrant Mother" photograph here during the Great Depression.
Today, Nipomo maintains its agricultural heritage while serving as a residential community with access to the region's natural attractions, including the Nipomo Native Garden and the nearby Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Complex.
