Mungo is situated in the far southwest of New South Wales, Australia, and is best known for being home to Mungo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This area holds profound cultural and archaeological significance, containing evidence of continuous human occupation dating back over 42,000 years.
The park features the remarkable Willandra Lakes Region, where ancient lake beds have preserved significant archaeological and geological findings, including the famous Mungo Lady and Mungo Man - some of the oldest human remains discovered in Australia. The area's distinctive landscape includes the iconic 'Walls of China', a series of eroded sand and clay formations that stretch along the eastern shore of the dried Lake Mungo.
The region continues to be of great cultural importance to the traditional Aboriginal custodians, particularly the Paakantyi, Ngyiampaa, and Mutthi Mutthi people, who maintain strong connections to this ancient landscape.
