Moose Factory is a historic community located on Moose Factory Island, in the Moose River, near James Bay in Northern Ontario. Established in 1673, it holds the distinction of being the second-oldest English-speaking settlement in Canada and the oldest English-speaking settlement in Ontario.
The community was founded as a Hudson's Bay Company trading post and played a significant role in the fur trade history of Canada. Today, Moose Factory is primarily home to the Moose Cree First Nation, blending indigenous cultural heritage with its colonial past. The community maintains strong connections to its history through various heritage sites, including the Centennial Museum, which is housed in a former Hudson's Bay Company staff house. The area's cultural landscape reflects both its Indigenous roots and its importance in Canadian colonial history, making it a unique place where traditional Cree culture meets historical European influence.
