Montauban is a historic city in southern France, situated in the Tarn-et-Garonne department of the Occitanie region. Founded in 1144, it is one of the oldest planned medieval towns in France, known for its characteristic pink-hued buildings made from local brick. The city's central square, Place Nationale, is a remarkable example of 17th-century architecture with its double row of arcades.
Montauban has a rich cultural heritage, being the birthplace of the renowned painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, whose work is celebrated in the city's Musée Ingres Bourdelle. The museum, housed in a former episcopal palace, also features works by the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, another famous native of the city. The town's cultural landscape is further enhanced by its well-preserved historical architecture, including the Pont Vieux, a medieval bridge spanning the River Tarn, and various religious buildings that reflect its complex religious history during the Protestant Reformation.
