Metlakatla is a unique community located on Annette Island in southeastern Alaska. It is the only Native American reserve in Alaska and is home to the Metlakatla Indian Community, a group of Tsimshian people.

The settlement was founded in 1887 when a group of Tsimshian people, led by Anglican missionary William Duncan, migrated from British Columbia to establish a new community. The town maintains strong cultural traditions, including Native art forms such as totem carving, traditional dance, and music.

The community's economy historically centered around fishing, canneries, and lumber production. Today, Metlakatla continues to preserve its indigenous heritage while embracing modern development, making it an important site for understanding Alaska Native history and contemporary culture.
