Metamora is a historic village located in Woodford County, Illinois. The community, which serves as the county seat, has roots dating back to the early 19th century. Originally named Hanover, the village was renamed to Metamora in 1845, drawing inspiration from the play "Metamora, or the Last of the Wampanoags."
The village played a significant role in early Illinois history, notably as one of the locations where Abraham Lincoln practiced law during his circuit-riding days. The historic courthouse, built in 1845, still stands as a testament to this era and now serves as a state historic site.
While Metamora maintains its small-town charm, it has developed into a community that preserves its historical heritage while embracing modern developments.
