Mariposa is a historic town located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. As the southernmost county seat during the California Gold Rush, the town retains much of its 19th-century character and serves as a gateway community to Yosemite National Park. The town's name, which means "butterfly" in Spanish, was inspired by the swarms of Monarch butterflies that historically migrated through the area.
Today, Mariposa combines its rich Gold Rush heritage with a vibrant arts scene and outdoor recreation culture. The town's historic district features well-preserved buildings from the 1850s, including the Mariposa County Courthouse, which is the oldest continuously operating courthouse west of the Rocky Mountains.
