Lussac-les-Châteaux is a commune located in the Vienne department in western France, in the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The town is particularly known for its rich prehistoric heritage, notably the La Marche cave, discovered in 1937, which contains significant Magdalenian period engravings dating back to around 14,000 BCE. These prehistoric artworks, featuring both human and animal figures, represent some of the earliest known realistic human portraits in art history.
The area's geological formation, characterized by limestone cliffs along the Vienne River, provided natural shelter for prehistoric human settlements. Today, the commune preserves this important archaeological heritage while maintaining its characteristic rural French charm. The local Museum of Prehistory (Musée de Préhistoire) houses many of the archaeological findings from the area, making it an important site for understanding human cultural development in prehistoric Europe.
