Lota is a historic mining town located in the Biobío Region of Chile, approximately 40 kilometers south of Concepción. The city's history is deeply intertwined with coal mining, which was its primary economic activity from the mid-19th century until 1997.
Lota was home to one of Chile's most important coal mines, known as the Chiflón del Diablo (Devil's Draft), which operated underwater and extended several kilometers beneath the Pacific Ocean. The city's cultural heritage is strongly influenced by its mining past, reflected in its industrial architecture and the lifestyle of its former mining community.
The Parque Lota, which includes the Isidora Cousiño Park and the Cousiño-Goyenechea family mansion, stands as a testament to the wealth generated during the coal mining era and showcases notable 19th-century landscape design.
