Lescar is a historic commune located in southwestern France, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This ancient city, situated on a hill overlooking the Gave de Pau river, was once the capital of Béarn and an important stop on the Way of Saint James pilgrimage route.
The town is particularly known for its remarkable Romanesque cathedral, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, built in the 12th century, which served as the burial place for the kings of Navarre. Today, Lescar combines its rich historical heritage with modern development, maintaining its character as a cultural center in the Pau urban area. The town's archaeological remains and medieval architecture reflect its significance during the Gallo-Roman period, when it was known as Beneharnum.
