Kotzebue, also known by its Iñupiaq name Qikiqtaġruk, is a city located on a small peninsula in Northwest Alaska. This coastal community sits above the Arctic Circle and serves as a regional hub for the Northwest Arctic Borough. The area has been continuously inhabited by Iñupiat people for at least 600 years, making it one of Alaska's oldest continuously inhabited locations. The modern town was named after Otto von Kotzebue, a Baltic German explorer who discovered the sound in 1818.
The community maintains strong ties to its Native Alaskan heritage, with many residents continuing traditional subsistence activities such as hunting, fishing, and gathering. Kotzebue's cultural landscape is predominantly shaped by Iñupiat traditions and values. The town serves as an important center for preserving and sharing Native Alaskan culture, featuring local artifacts and cultural programs that document the region's rich history and ongoing traditions.
