Kelso is a ghost town located in San Bernardino County, California, in the heart of the Mojave Desert. Originally established in 1905 as a railroad depot along the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad (now Union Pacific), the town played a crucial role in supporting train operations across the Mojave Desert.
The town's most notable landmark is the Kelso Depot, a beautifully preserved Mission Revival-style building that now serves as a visitor center and museum for the Mojave National Preserve. At its peak during World War II, Kelso was home to nearly 2,000 residents, largely railroad workers and their families. Today, while mostly abandoned, the town represents an important piece of California's railroad and mining history, offering visitors a glimpse into the American West's transportation heritage and desert culture.
