Keene is a small unincorporated community located in Kern County, California. The community is historically significant as it is home to the National Chavez Center and César E. Chávez National Monument, situated on the former Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz (Our Lady Queen of Peace) compound.
This site served as the headquarters of the United Farm Workers (UFW) labor union and was the home of civil rights leader César Chávez from 1971 until his death in 1993. The area, nestled in the Tehachapi Mountains, preserves and commemorates the life and work of César Chávez and the farm worker movement he led, offering visitors insight into an important chapter of American labor and civil rights history.
