Kealakekua is a historic place located in the South Kona District on the western side of Hawaii's Big Island. The name Kealakekua translates to "the pathway of the gods" in Hawaiian.
This area is particularly significant in Hawaiian history as the location where British explorer Captain James Cook first landed on the island in 1779 and where he later met his death. Kealakekua Bay, with its crystal-clear waters, is not only a historic landmark but also an important cultural site for Native Hawaiians. The area preserves numerous archaeological and cultural sites, including ancient temples (heiau) and the Hikiau Heiau complex. The bay and its surrounding areas continue to play a vital role in helping visitors and residents understand the rich cultural heritage and historical significance of Hawaii.
