Játiva (or Xàtiva in Valencian) is a historic city located in the province of Valencia, in Spain's Valencian Community. Situated on the slopes of Monte Bernisa, the city has been a significant settlement since Roman times. The city is known for its rich cultural heritage, particularly its impressive castle (Castell de Xàtiva) which sits atop a dual-peaked hill overlooking the town.
During the medieval period, Játiva was an important center for paper manufacturing and was also known for its artistic contributions, being the birthplace of several notable painters including the Renaissance artist José de Ribera. The city's historical quarter preserves many architectural treasures, including Gothic and Baroque churches, palaces, and the Collegiate Basilica.
Játiva also played a significant role in Spanish history, particularly during the War of Spanish Succession, when the city was burned under the orders of Philip V, earning it the nickname "City of the Thousand Fountains" due to its subsequent reconstruction featuring numerous decorative water features.
