Jamestown is a historic gold rush-era town located in Tuolumne County, California. Founded in 1848 during the California Gold Rush, it was one of the first gold mining settlements in California, nicknamed "Gateway to the Southern Mines."
This small community preserves much of its 19th-century character through its historic downtown area, which features original buildings from the gold rush period. The town is also known for its connection to railroad history, being home to Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, which houses one of the most intact and still-functioning railroad roundhouses in the United States.
While no longer a mining town, Jamestown maintains its historical significance while serving as a cultural destination that showcases California's gold rush heritage and railroad history.
