Holywell is a historic market town in Flintshire, North Wales, known for its significant religious heritage. The town takes its name from St Winefride's Well, a holy site that has been a place of pilgrimage since the 7th century and is sometimes referred to as the "Lourdes of Wales." This ancient well is one of the few remaining pilgrimage sites in Britain where the medieval tradition continues to the present day.
The town developed around this sacred spring and grew into an important industrial center during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in textile and copper manufacturing. Today, Holywell combines its rich religious history with a blend of historic architecture, including medieval buildings and Victorian industrial heritage. The town center maintains its traditional Welsh market town character, with numerous listed buildings and a pedestrianized high street that serves as the commercial heart of the community.
