Hiva Oa is the second largest island in the Marquesas Islands archipelago, a remote part of French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France. Located in the South Pacific Ocean, this volcanic island is known for its dramatic landscapes featuring steep cliffs, lush valleys, and archaeological sites.
The island gained significant cultural recognition as the final home of French Post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin and Belgian singer Jacques Brel, both of whom are buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Atuona, the island's main village. The island preserves important archaeological remains of ancient Polynesian civilization, including the largest ancient stone sculptures in French Polynesia at Taaoa.
Traditional Marquesan culture continues to thrive on Hiva Oa, with residents maintaining practices such as traditional dance, music, and tiki carving.
