Hidalgo del Parral, often simply called Parral, is a historic mining city located in the southern part of Chihuahua state, Mexico. Founded in 1631 after the discovery of rich silver deposits, the city played a significant role in Mexico's mining history and was once one of the most important silver mining centers in the world.
The city gained additional historical significance as the location where Revolutionary leader Pancho Villa was assassinated in 1923. Today, Parral preserves much of its colonial architecture and mining heritage, with several historic buildings and museums dedicated to both its mining past and revolutionary history. The city's historic center features notable examples of Spanish colonial architecture, including the Church of San José and various historic mansions.
While mining activities continue to influence the local economy, the city has developed a cultural identity that combines its industrial heritage with traditional Mexican customs and arts.
