Hanyu is a city located in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. Founded as a city in 1954, it sits in the northern Kanto region and has historically been an important center for textile production, particularly known for its silk weaving industry.
The city developed around the old Nakasendo highway, one of Japan's major historical trade routes, which connected Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with Kyoto. Today, Hanyu maintains its industrial heritage while serving as a residential city within the Greater Tokyo Area.
The city preserves aspects of traditional Japanese culture through its temples, seasonal festivals, and local crafts, while also embracing modern development.
