Gwinn is a small unincorporated community located in Marquette County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Founded in 1907 as a company town for the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Mining Company, Gwinn was designed as a model town by renowned architect Warren Manning. The community's unique planning and architectural heritage reflects the early 20th century ideals of the "Garden City" movement.
Originally named "Model Town," Gwinn later took its current name from William Gwinn Mather, who was then the president of Cleveland-Cliffs. The town's historic district features distinctive architecture and planned community layouts that represent an important piece of Michigan's mining and industrial heritage.
Today, Gwinn maintains its small-town character while serving as a residential community in the Upper Peninsula's mining region.
