Grammichele is a town in the Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily. The town is notable for its unique hexagonal urban plan, designed and built in 1693 after the original settlement, Occhiolà, was destroyed by a devastating earthquake.
The new town was constructed under the direction of Carlo Maria Carafa Branciforte, Prince of Butera, following Renaissance urban planning ideals. The central hexagonal piazza, Piazza Carlo Maria Carafa, forms the heart of the town from which six main streets radiate outward. This geometric layout reflects the urban planning philosophies of the late 17th century and represents an important example of post-disaster reconstruction in Sicilian baroque period.
The town maintains its historical character while serving as a small agricultural and commercial center in the Catania province.
