Fort Steele is a heritage town located in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada. Originally established in 1864 as a gold mining settlement called Galbraith's Ferry, it was later renamed Fort Steele in honor of Superintendent Sam Steele of the North-West Mounted Police. The town flourished in the 1890s as a mining community but declined when the Canadian Pacific Railway bypassed it in favor of nearby Cranbrook.
Today, Fort Steele Heritage Town serves as a living history museum, preserving and showcasing the cultural heritage of British Columbia's late Victorian period. The site features more than 60 restored or reconstructed buildings, demonstrating the daily life, architecture, and economic activities of a typical Canadian frontier town from the late 19th century. Visitors can experience historical reenactments, traditional crafts, and various demonstrations that bring the region's past to life.
