Eyam is a historic village in Derbyshire, England, known for its remarkable story of sacrifice during the Great Plague of 1665-1666. When the plague reached the village through a bundle of infected cloth, the villagers, led by Reverend William Mompesson, made the extraordinary decision to quarantine themselves to prevent the disease from spreading to neighboring communities. During this period, approximately one-third of the village's population perished.
Today, Eyam serves as both a living community and a testament to this historical event, with several preserved buildings and monuments from the plague period. The village maintains its historical character with traditional limestone cottages and historic structures, including the Anglo-Saxon Celtic cross in the churchyard and the parish church of St. Lawrence, which dates back to the 13th century. The village also features a small museum that documents its unique history and the daily life of its past inhabitants.
