Esashi is a historic port town located in southern Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island. Founded in 1456, it played a significant role as one of Hokkaido's major herring fishing ports during the Edo and Meiji periods.
The town preserves much of its historical character through its traditional architecture and cultural heritage sites. Notable among these are the Esashi-Kaido, an old merchant street lined with historical buildings, and the Esashi Oiwake Museum, which celebrates the region's folk music tradition. The town's cultural identity is deeply connected to its maritime history and the preservation of traditional performing arts, particularly the Esashi Oiwake folk songs, which were sung by herring fishermen and have been designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan.
