Elstow is a historic village located in Bedfordshire, England, most notably known as the birthplace of John Bunyan, the renowned 17th-century author of 'The Pilgrim's Progress.' The village maintains much of its medieval character, centered around Elstow Abbey, originally founded as a Benedictine nunnery in 1078.
The Abbey Church of St Mary and St Helena still stands today as a parish church, representing significant Norman architecture. The village green, complete with its 15th-century Moot Hall, was once the heart of the community's market life and now serves as a small museum dedicated to John Bunyan and local history.
The rural character and historical buildings of Elstow provide visitors with a glimpse into the English village life that inspired Bunyan's literary works.
