Elkader is a small city serving as the county seat of Clayton County in northeastern Iowa. The city was founded in 1846 and was named after Algerian leader Abd el-Kader, making it the only town in the United States named after an Arab Muslim leader. This unique naming reflects the city's founders' admiration for el-Kader's resistance against French colonization.
The city sits along the Turkey River and features historic architecture, including the Elkader Keystone Bridge, built in 1889, which is one of the largest keystone arch bridges in the state. The community maintains strong connections to its heritage through various cultural events and historic preservation efforts, and the city has developed a sister city relationship with Mascara, Algeria, el-Kader's birthplace.
