Elche (or Elx in Valencian) is a historic city located in the province of Alicante in southeastern Spain. The city is particularly notable for its Palmeral of Elche, a vast palm grove of over 200,000 date palms that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. This palm grove, dating back to Moorish times, is the largest in Europe and represents a remarkable example of the transfer of landscape and agricultural practices from one culture and continent to another.

The city has a rich cultural heritage that spans over two millennia, with influences from Iberian, Roman, Arab, and Christian civilizations. One of its most significant cultural treasures is the Mystery Play of Elche, a sacred musical drama that has been performed since medieval times and was declared a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The city also maintains important archaeological sites and museums that showcase its diverse history, from ancient Iberian settlements to its development as a major industrial center known for its footwear industry in the 20th century.
