Derby is a suburban city located in Sedgwick County, Kansas, situated just south of Wichita, the largest city in the state. Founded in 1869, the city was originally named El Paso but was later changed to Derby in 1956. The community has grown from a small railroad town to become one of the largest suburbs in the Wichita metropolitan area.
Derby benefits from its proximity to McConnell Air Force Base and has developed a strong community focus on education and recreational activities. The city maintains several public parks and community spaces that contribute to its cultural life. While smaller than its neighboring city Wichita in terms of cultural institutions, Derby has developed its own identity with community events and local initiatives that celebrate its heritage and foster arts and culture in the region.
