Delft is a city in the Dutch province of South Holland. It lies on the Schie River between Rotterdam and The Hague. Delft is best known because William of Orange lived there from 1572 and was murdered by Balthasar Gerards in 1584. In addition, the city is known as the birthplace of Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer and for the famous Delft blue, white pottery with blue decoration manufactured in Delft. The city developed into an industrial city in the 19th century, but today is also a city of knowledge due to the presence of the Technical University and the research institute TNO, among others. The historic city center is characterized by old gabled houses, picturesque streets, small canals and attractive squares.
