Cromwell is a historic town located in Central Otago, New Zealand, situated at the junction of the Clutha and Kawarau Rivers. Originally established during the Otago gold rush of the 1860s, the town has transformed significantly over the years.
Today, Cromwell is known for its fruit-growing industry, particularly cherries, apricots, and wine production in the surrounding valley. The town underwent major changes in the 1980s when much of its historic business district was flooded by the creation of Lake Dunstan for the Clyde Dam project. Parts of the original town were relocated to higher ground, and the historic precinct was preserved, featuring restored buildings from the gold mining era.
The area's rich heritage is reflected in its preserved architecture and historical sites, while its modern identity embraces both agricultural innovation and tourism.
